Yelp has announced that it’s teaming up with its recent acquiree, Hatch, to integrate OpenAI’s new GPT-Live-1 into Yelp Host. This should bring advanced voice AI capabilities to restaurants and service SMBs, letting them automate functions like fielding calls from inbound queries and new customers.
There’s a lot there, so let’s unpack these elements one at a time. First, Hatch is a lead management and customer communications platform that Yelp acquired back in January for $300 million. Specializing in home services, it helps SMBs convert leads into paying customers in automated and AI-driven ways.
As for Yelp Host, it’s a voice AI function for restaurants. Launched last October, it automates inbound calls, leads, and reservations. Trained on SMB data – much of it coming from Yelp tools – it can automate customer-facing functions. It also has a counterpart called Yelp Receptionist for service-based SMBs.
Finally, the last ingredient in this cocktail is GPT-Live-1. For those unfamiliar, this is a new front-end voice layer that is built to interact directly with inbound callers. Together with the above foundational pieces, it uplevels Yelp’s ability to help resource-constrained SMBs process and cultivate inbound customer calls.
Interlocking Capabilities
If we step back to look at this, it’s a smart integration considering the interlocking capabilities of each component. For example, GPT-Live-1 is the latest in conversational intelligence, but it’s useless on its own. Yelp’s SMB-specific data – in both Yelp Host and Hatch – offers the data backbone to do its thing.
For example, training GPT-Live-1 on SMB data in Yelp Host can let the voice interface embody the voice of a given business. Beyond persona, Yelp Host’s structured data (think: reservation systems) makes GPT-Live-1 functionally sound in helping callers book reservations or get their questions answered.
“Many assume that having the latest voice model is enough,” said Hatch CEO Chris Bache, “but building a voice agent that truly acts as an extension of a unique business requires more than just deploying an AI agent with a polished voice and a prompt. It takes deep integration, real underlying intelligence, and a thoughtful design to deliver meaningful value.”
Coloring all of that with practical outcomes that can be expected, Yelp points to a few examples:
- More natural conversations and reliable call handling for local businesses, as the voice AI can now listen and respond simultaneously.
- Callers can interrupt, change topics mid-sentence, or speak to people in the background, and the AI quickly adapts.
- The voice AIs can automatically detect and respond to callers in nearly any language, so no customers are missed due to a language barrier.
- Yelp Host and Hatch can also detect the caller’s tone, such as excitement, frustration or impatience, and respond appropriately.

Natural Alignment
This latest move from Yelp is aligned with a broader trajectory we’ve been tracking. Like everyone else, it’s on a mission to integrate AI across the board. But the driving factor propelling Yelp’s efforts is to alleviate classic SMB pain points and resource constraints. It’s all about letting them do more with less.
That mission, shared by several other players in the Localogyverse, represents a natural alignment between AI’s capabilities and SMB goals. There hasn’t been an emerging tech in a long time – perhaps going back to the smartphone itself – that has this level of natural alignment with SMB dynamics.
Back to Yelp’s Hatch acquisition, it checked this box, as we examined at the time. We presume a lot of those integrations have been underway on the back end. This latest deal is the first explicit sign we’ve seen of Hatch’s value manifesting outward. According to Bache, we can expect more of that.
“Voice AI has already transformed how service businesses handle calls, avoid missed leads, book jobs after hours, and enable businesses to scale,” he said. “But for much of the industry, voice AI is in the early innings.”
