Wordpress.com this week became the latest player to offer prompt-driven website creation and development. Meant to reduce website building to a conversational UX, it integrates third-party tools such as Claude, letting users speak commands to create WordPress staples like pages and posts.
This will take shape in agents that users command and deploy to create and maintain their websites. These agents are also capable of tertiary web development work, such as managing comments, updating metadata, organizing taxonomies (tags and categories), and other SEO-related work.
When looking at this range of features, they can be categorized under the broader category of vibe coding – thus following players like Wix into this momentous subsegment of AI. But it’s also more than vibe coding in that it’s agentic. It’s not just about users and prompts, but autonomous AI agents.
This is an important distinction as it goes deeper with agents that work independently on multi-part tasks. Rather than a small set of fixed commands, agents operate on an ongoing basis to accomplish a given goal such as keeping up with SEO tasks – under defined parameters – as new pages are created.
This represents a broader shift from prompt-driven AI to agentic AI. The latter requires less hand-holding and is thus more scalable, as we discussed earlier this week with SOCi CEO Afif Khoury. But it’s also more advanced in terms of trusting AI to operate on a longer leash. Either way, it’s AI’s next stage.
Agentic Infusion
Backing up for context, who are we talking about here? WordPress the platform (not WordPress.com the host) is the most prevalent publishing platform on the web, running 43 percent of all sites. At its core is a simple web publishing tool, but it’s infinitely expandable with tens of thousands of themes and plugins.
As an open-source platform, WordPress has no owner, but it supports several enterprises that offer paid services like hosting. That’s where WordPress.com comes into the picture. Owned by Automattic, it sits at the center of the WordPress universe as one of its biggest web hosts and domain registrars.
In that light, this agentic infusion could have a impact due to WordPress.com’s sheer reach. It could mean large-scale acclimation to AI tools – which could help alleviate the technology’s (well-deserved) trust issues. This is especially the case for a large segment of traditionally tech-averse SMBs.
But it’s that very tech aversion that could be the factor that drives AI adoption. Though Agentic AI is emerging tech, it’s value proposition is ironically to liberate SMBs from tech. In other words, the automation it promises means that SMBs can spend less time as digital sherpas, which will be music to their ears.
Beyond aversion to software, there’s another critical factor for SMBs: time. It’s their biggest scarcity. If any technology can free SMBs to be nail artists, roofers, and dentists – rather than digital marketers – it has a good shot at adoption. WordPress.com’s latest agentic integration checks those boxes.
