Ep. 13 Features Yelp SMB Expert Emily Washcovick

This Week In Local, SMB Expert Emily Washcovick

Episode 13 of Localogy’s This Week in Local podcasts features a conversation about all things SMB with Yelp’s Emily Washcovick. What’s her title, you might ask? Well, she just happens to be Yelp’s “small business expert”.

Emily’s job as Yelp’s small business expert involves getting to know Yelp’s small business customers and their needs intimately. And creating content that helps SMBs use Yelp more effectively to grow their businesses. For example, she hosts Yelp’s podcast”Behind the Reviews” (a partnership with Entrepreneur) which is designed to explore how reviews are tied to customer experience and small business success.

On Episode 13 of This Week in Local, Emily talked about a range of issues, from “misconceptions” about Yelp among SMBs (we did press her for specific examples) to why reviews matter. And also the importance of having enough longer-form reviews. Brevity isn’t everything, after all.

One important thread in the discussion involved what Yelp expected small businesses would look like coming out of the pandemic and what actually happened.

“Clear communication became paramount when the pandemic hit. Businesses had to figure out how to quickly communicate what they were doing. And it was so different from what they had previously done. So that was what the beginning of the pandemic was all about,” Emily said.

Emily said she expected a post-pandemic world where different businesses permanently adopted different elements of the pandemic playbook (contactless and so on). The reality seems perhaps closer to life before Clovid.

“But really what we have seen is a return to those old consumer touchpoints that we have all enjoyed.”
