You’ve likely heard tidbits over the past several weeks about the ongoing saga between Epic Games and Apple. The short version is that Epic has waged a crusade against Apple to argue that it has monopoly power, and that its 30 percent cut of iOS app sales and in-app purchases is egregious and extortive.
Why is this important? It sets a precedent for app distribution… which essentially impacts the entire consumer tech space. And what’s the latest? A court ruled that Apple isn’t a monopoly after all… but that it can’t prevent app developers from offering direct payments. This is mostly a win for Apple.
Then last week, the plot thickened. Apple isn’t letting Fortnite back on the App Store. That’s right, no Fortnite for iOS users… and no Fortnite access to iOS users.
