Digital Boot Camp: Q&A with Yelp, Yahoo, YP, Closely, Moz

During this session at the first Digital Boot Camp, the audience got a chance to get answers to burning questions as it relates to digital marketing.  Here are some of the questions and answers taken from the session:

How do you build an online presence for a new company?

Build the brand from the customer out and get started by seeking referrals, reviews, shares, etc.

If you find business information that doesn’t look right, how do you change it?

  • Find out where you are listed and see if any business info is incorrect. Adjust manually if possible.
  • Familiarize yourself with Infogroup, Neustar, Acxiom and Factual and get your incorrect business information updated there.

Is there a difference in quality of desktop vs. mobile user?

Both consumers are important. While mobile users are growing, both consumers need to be targeted and accounted for.

There are so many mediums, how do I identify which is most effective for my type of business?

  • If you’re looking to reach a broader market you might consider more paid and social strategies, while those seeking to reach local consumers should get a website listed on major search sites.
  • Know who your customer is, go find your customer and make messages that connect with what they are looking for.
  • Find out what your competitors are doing. From there figure out what you can see what you’re doing well and what you need help with.
  • It isn’t just about capturing leads. Be ready to convert any lead into a sale.

What is one piece of advice you would give a small business?

  • Invest in website first, make sure it is mobile responsive and that it shows up in organic search.
  • Engage with customers on whatever site they use.
  • Stop and understand your customer.
  • Convert calls into sales and find ways to see reviews and respond.
  • Don’t consider social media as reputation management, it is merely an extension of customer service.
